This Hertfordshire town is north-west of London, and has been in existence since the 8th century. King Henry VIII granted Hemel Hempstead a town charter in 1539, and after WWII it was developed as a new town. Hemel is best known for its ‘Magic Roundabout’, where six roads meet and flow in both directions – the first of its kind in Britain. The town centre boasts water features and landscaped gardens known as the Watergardens, and the principal shopping street is the pedestrianized Marlowes. The Jarman Park leisure centre houses numerous entertainment venues, including an ice rink and a water park.
