The town of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, lies on the River Douglas, east-northeast of Liverpool, west-northwest of Manchester and south of Preston. It used to be part of Lancashire, and, towards the end of the Middle Ages, possessed a royal charter along with three other Lancashire boroughs, namely Preston, Liverpool, and Lancaster. Wigan has a long history, which shows in the 216 listed edifices found there, some twenty of which are grade II. The town's only scheduled monument is Mab's Cross, a stone cross that appears to originate from the 13th century. Other attractions are Wigan Pier and Trencherfield Mill.
