Local residents grow fruit and veg in a Premier Inn car park

by Andrea on 31 May 2011

In the coming summer months, green-fingered Belsize Park residents will be giving back to their community in spades by transforming local spots into community fruit and vegetable growing sites, most notably the car park of the Premier Inn in Ornan Road. Centred on raising awareness about green sustainable living and part of Transition Belsize, the NW3’s sustainable living project, this scheme is set to put Belsize on the map with recognition for its community food growing.

Additionally, the Belsize Park tube station, Swiss Cottage and parts of the Royal Free Hospital have been earmarked as ideal food growing sites, and organisers are considering a number of other under-used patches of green space for use.

“The aim of this is to inspire residents to grow food, show them how to do it and encourage people to get involved and make the area more beautiful,” says Transition Belsize joint organiser Alexis Rowell.
