Salford - Local Area Information
The city of Salford, in Greater Manchester, North West England, lies on the banks of the River Irwell. Once part of Lancashire, Salford was a Royalist stronghold during England's civil war, and in its heyday was considered to be of more commercial and cultural significance than Manchester. The area shows signs of human habitation dating back to Neolithic times, seven to ten millennia ago, and Bronze Age and Celtic artefacts have also been found there. Salford's attractions include Ordsall Hall, an 800-year-old house, the Bridgewater Canal, Salford Old Town Hall, and the Lowry Centre, a celebrated gallery and theatre complex.
